MANUS Metagloves Pro: When the Hand Becomes a Digital Interface
With the rise of virtual reality, robotics, and immersive simulations, naturally reproducing hand gestures is becoming increasingly important. MANUS Metagloves Pro address this need through precise finger motion capture and real-time digital reconstruction. They enable users to control a virtual environment, animate a digital hand, or transmit gestures to a robotic system.
High-Precision Motion Capture
Metagloves Pro use an electromagnetic tracking (EMF) system. Five sensors, positioned at the fingertips, measure their position and orientation at 120 Hz. This finger tracking does not require a direct line of sight to cameras, reducing the occlusion issues encountered with optical systems.
Using these measurements, the software reconstructs an anatomical hand model with 25 degrees of freedom. It reproduces finger articulation and movement to represent detailed gestures, grips, and manipulations. The hand’s overall position in space can be tracked using an external tracking device attached to the gloves.
Turning Gestures into Usable Data
The collected data makes it possible to examine finger positions, joint angles, and how a gesture evolves over time. It can be used to compare different grips, analyse a manipulation sequence, or build datasets for robotics.
In a virtual environment, this information enables developers to animate a digital hand and implement interactions such as grasping, moving, or releasing an object. The quality of these interactions also depends on the software and physics simulation used.
Designed for Professional Use
Metagloves Pro feature a modular architecture, with a detachable top electronics module that can be transferred between multiple textile gloves. This design makes it easier to share equipment and maintain the textiles, which can be washed once the electronics have been removed.
Swappable batteries, with an advertised battery life of up to three hours, allow users to extend sessions by replacing the battery. Calibration takes approximately 50 seconds across four steps, and profiles can be saved to simplify subsequent use.
Software Integration and Applications
The gloves work with MANUS Core, which processes the measurements and reconstructs the digital hand. This data can then feed motion capture, simulation, or robotic control applications, depending on the tools and integrations used.
Applications include 3D animation, teleoperation, immersive training, and movement research. In human–computer interaction research, the gloves can help investigate how a person grasps an object or performs a manual task.
An Interface Built on Gesture Precision
MANUS Metagloves Pro turn hand movements into detailed digital input. Their value lies in capturing and using gestures to create natural interactions, analyse object manipulation, and develop hand-controlled systems. The standard version does not include integrated haptic feedback.
